Mayur Natyalaya, which literally means the “peacock dance school,” is the abode of Indian classical and folk dances. Its Artistic Director, Mrs. Ashwini Sangam, founded the school with the purpose of propagating the rich Indian cultural heritage, through the medium of dance. The school enlists both children and adults as its students, ages ranging from tender 5 years to mature 45 years.
Mayur Natyalaya’s founder Ashwini Sangam is an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer. She started learning dance from her early childhood, under her teacher Vidushi Late Mrs. Prabhavathi Vamancharya, back in India. Ashwini bloomed as an artful, and gracious dancer under the watchful eyes of Vidushi Mrs. Rekha Hedge, a highly acclaimed and revered dancer herself.
Ashwini has choreographed, and performed at many multicultural and international events in and around San Diego, including, Federation of Indian Association’s programs, “Unity In Diversity” series of events conducted by San Diego Indian American Society, Balboa park events, and numerous Indian cultural events. She also conducts dance workshops every summer in India. She has also been invited to judge at "Garba with Attitude", a national student competition with participants from 10 Universities across the U.S. Before coming to San Diego, Ashwini had given many performances in India.
Ashwini teaches students from the Del Sur, 4s Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos, and Rancho Bernardo areas of San Diego.
